Oil is the dominant energy resource for the time being and predicted that it will increase to 9.4 million barrels per day in 2040. The formation of water-in-oil emulsions can cause multiple problems in production and refining of crude oil and related products, for they are extremely undesired. Stabilizing W/O emulsion, asphaltenes presented in crude oil act as surface-active compounds, organize and form rigid films at the water-oil interface. Addition of chemicals is an approach to break up those emulsions. In this study, the ability of breaking water emulsions in oil were studied through surfactants as demulsifiers and investigated using bottle test. Also, the effect of adding nanoparticles strengthening demulsification, as well as its influence on asphaltene was investigated. The results show that the surfactant structure affects the demulsification process of water emulsion in oil. Techniques such as bottle test, FT-IR, Uv-vis, tensiometery, XRD, and optical microscopy were performed to consider the yields of emulsifiers. The findings indicate that adding of nanoparticle to surfactant enhances the breaking of water emulsion in oil.
