AI upcycling plastic crushing machine with IoT

Plastic waste is an ever-growing mountain of trash that is rarely recycled and often found in landfills and oceans. One of the greatest hurdles of plastic recycling is the sheer number of the types of plastic that are found in the recycle bins in society. Although current recycle facilities possess advanced separation methods such as thermal adhesion sorting and electrostatic sorting, these specialized equipment are not widely used due to their expensive cost. We suggest a streamlined method of aiding the separation process of plastic separation e on-site by using a simple dual use sensor and machine learning algorithm. The sensor will be a combination of an infrared sensor to analyze the polymer of the plastic waste, and a general optical camera will be used to separate the transparent plastic waste from the color plastic waste. The machine learning library will be built by accumulating a vast library of plastic waste images to aid in the identification of the type of plastic waste. This small sensor will be installed inside plastic recycle bins to identify and separate the plastic waste at the initial site of recycling.
